Initial results: Socialists winning Greek election

ATHENS, Greece — Greece’s opposition Socialists have claimed victory over the governing conservatives in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

Senior party official and former minister Evangelos Venizelos says the Socialists have won a “historic” victory over the scandal-battered conservatives.

With 15.36 of the votes counted nationwide, George Papandreou’s Socialists have 43.16 percent, compared to Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’ 36.21 percent.
