Ohio troopers balk at contract weight limits
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio state troopers in contract negotiations with the state are fighting a rule that allows the dismissal of those who consistently exceed weight limits.
Department of Public Safety records show that no Ohio troopers or sergeants have been fired over weight in recent years, but six were removed from duty in 2003.
At least 11 have received verbal or written reprimands since January.
National Troopers Coalition chairman Mike Eades says union contracts in Alaska and Massachusetts also allow for removing overweight troopers from duty.
He says most law enforcement agencies that address fitness have health programs and incentives.
The Ohio troopers’ contract includes extra monthly pay for those who meet standards.
