Oct. 6 memorial in Texas for ag scientist Borlaug

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A memorial service for Nobel Peace Prize winner and agricultural scientist Norman Borlaug has been set for Oct. 6 at Texas A&M University.

Borlaug, who was known as the father of the “green revolution,” developed a type of wheat that helped feed the world and fostered a movement that is credited with saving up to 1 billion people from starvation. He was awarded the Nobel prize in 1970.

Borlaug died Saturday at his Dallas home of complications of cancer. He was 95.

The Iowa-born Borlaug remained active well into his 90s, campaigning for the use of biotechnology to fight hunger and working on projects to alleviate poverty.

University officials say the memorial will be open to the public.
