Man who aired Hezbollah TV shows sentenced in NYC
NEW YORK — A man who helped the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah by broadcasting its television programs in New York City has been sentenced to more than a year in prison.
Saleh Elahwal (soh-LAY’ ee-loh-WAH’) was sentenced Tuesday to a year and five months by Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman. The Matawan, N.J., resident had pleaded guilty to providing material support to Hezbollah.
The sentencing came two months after the main defendant in the case was sentenced to more than five years in prison.
Elahwal admitted accepting thousands of dollars to provide satellite transmission services to the station Al Manar between September 2005 and August 2006.
Hezbollah has fought Israel since the early 1980s. Israel and the U.S. consider it a terrorist organization.
