New NATO chief chairs meeting on Afghanistan

BRUSSELS — NATO’s new civilian and military leaders are briefing members of the alliance’s decision-making North Atlantic Council on recent command changes in Afghanistan and other matters affecting the war.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and supreme allied commander U.S. Adm. James Stavridis are meeting Tuesday with envoys from the alliance’s 28 member states.

Both men are new to their posts, part of a new team of civilian and military leaders who will direct the escalating conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, recently conferred at a nearby NATO air base with Gen. David Petraeus, who has overall responsibility for the war.
