Navy punishes commander of ship that ran aground
HONOLULU — The Navy says it has disciplined the former commanding officer of a warship than ran aground on a coral reef off Hawaii.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet said Tuesday that Capt. John Carroll has been given nonjudicial punishment for “dereliction of duty and improper hazarding of a vessel.”
It didn’t release details of the punishment. Carroll was relieved of his command after the grounding.
Commanders can impose nonjudicial punishment without going through a court-martial. A record of the punishment will be placed in Carroll’s record.
The USS Port Royal ran aground off Oahu in February, causing $25 million to $40 million in damage to the ship. Hawaii is seeking financial compensation from the Navy for the reef damage.

A professional organisation not only rewards the deserving but also awards punishments to pinpoint accountability. do we have it in us in India for such actions or are we really a soft state as our adversaries claim? |
