Report: Man arrested for entering Suu Kyi’s home
YANGON, Myanmar — A Myanmar newspaper says authorities have arrested an American man who allegedly swam across a lake and snuck into the lakeside home of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The Myanma Ahlin newspaper says in its Thursday edition that police fished the man out of Yangon’s Inya Lake on Wednesday while he was returning from the visit.
The newspaper gave no details of the man’s identity or motives. The report says he confessed to swimming across the lake Sunday evening, sneaking into Suu Kyi’s residence and then returning late Tuesday before being spotted and arrested early Wednesday.
Suu Kyi has spent more than 13 of the last 19 years under house arrest. Her home is tightly guarded and she is not allowed visitors, aside from her doctor.
It would be the first time a foreigner has snuck into her home.
