Murder accused gets life term

NEW DELHI - A court here Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his acquaintance, who was having an affair with his wife, by setting him afire.

Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kumar Chauhan also fined Mohammad Khursheed Rs.2,000 after holding him guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

The court relied upon the statements of prosecution witnesses Mohammad Irshad and Arman Khan, who had taken the victim Mohammad Murtaza to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan hospital after the incident Feb 28, 2006.

Both witnesses deposed that the accused was angry with the victim for having an affair with his wife Hasina.

According to the prosecution, the accused had burnt Murtaza after pouring kerosene on him at a place near Meena Bazar in the city’s old quarter. The victim, who was admitted to hospital with 90 percent burns, succumbed to his injuries March 3, 2006.
