Mother kills daughter, self at nursing home

OAKLAND, Calif. — Police say a woman fatally shot her disabled daughter before taking her own life at an Oakland nursing home.

Oakland Police Sgt. Jim Rullamas says 64-year-old Diana Marie Harden fatally shot her daughter, 43-year-old Yvette Harden, in her room at the Oakland Springs Health Center shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday.

Rullamas says the mother visited her daughter at least twice a week and called staff before coming Sunday evening. She apparently brought a revolver into her daughter’s room in a handbag.

Yvette Harden had been living at the facility for six years after suffering serious brain damage from a 1994 car accident that also left her partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair.

Police say they have no motive for the killing.
