Mexico court to probe day-care fire that killed 49

MEXICO CITY — The Supreme Court voted Thursday to open an investigation of alleged irregularities at a day care center where a fire killed 49 children in northern Mexico.

The court voted 8-3 to form a two-judge commission that will begin its probe of the June 5 blaze next week. The panel will have at least six months to report its findings.

Witnesses say there was only one working exit and insufficient safety precautions at the day care center in Hermosillo, the Sonora state capital.

A judge ordered the ABC day care center’s four owners to stand trial on Thursday, the Attorney General’s office said in a statement.

The court commission will have the power to make recommendations, but cannot order the government to take any specific action.
