Mets’ Castro leaves game with tight quad
NEW YORK — Mets catcher Ramon Castro left Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of a tight right quadriceps.
Acting manager Sandy Alomar Sr. said the injury was not serious and that Castro is ready to play.
Castro struck out swinging in the sixth inning and did not come out to catch the seventh. He was replaced by Omir Santos.
Alomar said Castro told him in the fifth inning that the quad was bothering him when ran the bases, but Alomar left him in the game because he anticipated making a double switch in the sixth.
“I gave him the extra inning and the at-bat because of the shortness of players and we didn’t want to waste him then,” Alomar said.
Santos has been serving as the Mets’ second catcher since starter Brian Schneider went to the disabled list on April 17 with a strained back. He was eligible to come off the DL on May 3.
