Medical official: 4 dead in Thai train derailment

BANGKOK — At least four people were killed and 23 others hospitalized when a train derailed during heavy rains early Monday near a popular seaside resort in central Thailand, a medical official said.

The train derailed before dawn near Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand, said Chatree Charoencheewakun, director of the Emergency Medical Institute of Thailand.

At least four people were killed and 23 taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, Chatree said, adding that medical teams were rushing to the scene to help others who may have been injured.

The train was traveling from the southern city of Trang to Bangkok when the accident occurred. About six of the train’s 16 cars derailed, the Nation newspaper said on its Web site.
