Patrick wants to do no harm in replacing Kennedy
BOSTON — Massachusetts Gov. Deval (deh-VAHL’) Patrick isn’t just thinking about who can represent the state in Washington as he considers a temporary replacement for the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
Political strategists and observers say he’s probably thinking about helping the Democrats solidify their filibuster-proof majority to pass a national health care overhaul.
He’s thinking about helping his good friend, President Barack Obama.
And he’s thinking about how to avoid political trouble heading into a re-election year.
An announcement could come as soon as Thursday. The legislature has approved a change in state law allowing the governor to fill the vacancy until a special election in January.
Both chambers are expected to give final approval Wednesday.
