Markets plummet as Mukherjee makes interim budget speech

MUMBAI - Indian equities slipped further Monday as acting finance minister Pranab Mukherjee delivered his interim budget speech. In the first part of his speech, Mukherjee signalled that the future economic situation looked grim.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange was trading at 9,397.21 points, down 2.47 percent or 237.53 points 10 minutes before noon. Mukherjee had started his speech around 11 a.m.

At the same time, the broader-based S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was at 2,876.45 points, 2.43 percent lower than its last close.
