BHUBANESWAR - A couple, belonging to the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), surrendered to the police in Rayagadda of Orissa on Wednesday.

The rebels reportedly involved in a dozen crimes identified as Surendra Vekwara (19) and his wife Ruby (18).

Surendra, a resident of Bisamkatak block of Rayagaad district, was a member of the core committee of the Basadara Division, which is led by Sabyasachi Panda. His wife was active member of Ghagudi Dalam, which is active in Gajapati district.

The surrendered couple, who had joined the movement in 2003, claimed that they had become disenchanted with the Maoist movement

The couple’s surrender comes on the day when Maoists called for a statewide shutdown protesting against the central government’s decision to ban them. (ANI)
