Manipur sees 60 percent polling in second phase

IMPHAL - Voting for the second and final phase of parliamentary elections in Manipur — to the Inner Manipur constituency — ended Wednesday with no incidents of violence, officials said.

‘According to preliminary reports, an estimated 60 percent polling was recorded, although the figure could increase as we are still in the process of compiling data from remote areas,’ an election official said.

‘Voting passed off peacefully,’ he added.

Manipur is the only state where the second phase elections were being held Wednesday, while in the rest of the country it will be conducted Thursday, election officials said here.

The first phase of polls in the state — for the Outer Manipur constituency — was held April 16.

There were seven candidates in the fray although it is mainly a triangular contest between M. Nara of the Communist Party of India, T. Meinya of the Congress, and Th Chaoba of Manipur People’s Party.
