Best Maine foliage in mountains

AUGUSTA, Maine — State foliage watchers say the lakes and mountains of western Maine and the Mount Katahdin region will be the best places to see brilliant fall colors this weekend.

Forest rangers from Moosehead Lake to Stratton, and Mount Katahdin to Lincoln are observing peak foliage conditions or at least 75 percent color change.

Rangers report 50 to 70 percent toward peak in locations like Rangeley, Rumford, Bethel, Grand Lake Stream and Calais.

The Department of Conservation says Camden Hills and Bradbury Mountain state parks will host guided foliage hikes on Sunday.

The National Weather Service predicts a dry, sunny and cool Saturday and Sunday.
