marriagecancelledcredjoeandMaine Election 2009 has all its focus on people’s opinion about the gay marriage, which has been legalized by an order signed by Maine’s governor in May.

People don’t seem to be much excited about gay marriage as they believe its their born freedom to marry whoever they love. Though they are reluctant to teach their children that marriage between man/man or woman/woman is acceptable.

The first results from the Maine elections on November 2, 2009 are in starting to be reported. There were 7 ballot initiatives that were voted on and the results that have already been decided are as follows:

Questions 2 (excise tax), 3 (school consolidation), and 4 (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) were all voted down. On the other hand, Questions 5 (legalizing medical marijuana) and 6 (transportation bond) passed the vote.

Questions 1 (gay marriage) and 7 (constitutional amendment are all still too close to call)

Gay marriage was put to a vote in Maine on Tuesday 3rd November 2009, in a closely watched referendum that gay-rights activists across the country would prove that public opinion is turning in their favor.

Voters had to decide whether to repeal or affirm a state law that would allow gay couples to wed. The law, passed by the Legislature last May never took effect because of a petition drive by conservatives.

By the end of the night, the real result was clear: Maine had voted to repeal the marriage law and continue the state’s prohibition on same-sex weddings.

It was a heartbreaking news for the gay activists, letting down all their struggle to establish same-sex marriage. But there are some bits of good news for the LGBT community. Inspite of their big defeat gay and lesbian candidates had prevailed in races around the country. A gay man was elected as mayor by Chapel Hill, N.C., Detroit’s new city council president is gay as well. In Houston, a lesbian mayoral candidate will go into a run-off having won a plurality on Tuesday.

it is a very sad day in america when someone cannot marry someone they love beucase they are gay. Blacks and whites can marry so why cannot we. It is also a very sad day in america when states such as California and maine need outside influence to repeal gay marriage in their own state. Why can’t other people from other states stop their bigoted attitude towards others and let peolle love and live. simple people.
