Magnitude 6.3 quake strikes off Taiwan

TAIPEI/BEIJING - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan Tuesday morning, China National Seismological Network reported.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 2 a.m., was six kilometers deep and 120 kilometers from Taiwan capital Taipei, it said.

Reports from the island said buildings swayed in most parts of the island and people were shaken awake. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

A second tremor struck at 4.28 a.m. with a magnitude of 5.0 in the same location, the seismological network reported.
