Colo.’s Loveland Ski Area first to open for season

GEORGETOWN, Colo. — Loveland Ski Area is announcing its earliest opening day in 40 years.

The ski area about 50 miles west of Denver will open for the season at 9 a.m. Wednesday, making it the first ski area in Colorado to open its slopes and likely the first in North America.

Troy Hawks of the trade group National Ski Areas Association says he’s not aware of any other resorts in North America that have opened yet.

The Boreal ski area on Donner Summit in California plans to open Saturday.

Arapahoe Basin often vies with Loveland to be the first Colorado ski area to open. It plans to open Friday, its earliest start ever.

Loveland’s opening-day run will have an 18-inch base.
