LUCKNOW - At least five passengers were injured when four coaches of the Kushinagar Express train from Mumbai derailed Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district, officials said.

“The derailment took place this (Wednesday) morning at the Odwara railway station,” Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector Kishori Prasad told IANS over phone from Basti, some 300 km from Lucknow.

If the train was speeding, the incident could have turned into a major mishap. Nobody was injured seriously in the derailment, as the train was moving quite slowly, he added.

According to officials, an inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause behind the derailment that disrupted the Lucknow-Gorakhpur rail route.

We have started the exercise to restore the rail route so that trains can run as per schedule, officials added.

The Kushinagar Express train was travelling from Mumbai to Gorakhpur.
