Suspects ordered freed in Texas yogurt shop case
AUSTIN, Texas — A judge in Texas has ordered the release from jail of two suspects awaiting retrial in the 1991 murders of four teenage girls at a yogurt shop in Austin.
Michael Scott and Robert Springsteen were previously convicted in the slaying of Amy Ayers, 13. Scott was sentenced to life in prison, and Springsteen was originally sent to death row.
Both convictions were overturned on appeal, and on Wednesday state District Judge Mike Lynch ordered the men released on personal recognizance bonds.
New DNA tests on evidence from the crime scene have revealed the presence of someone other than Scott or Springsteen, and defense attorneys say that proves their innocence.
