RANCHI - The government of Jharkhand has cleared the formation of an industrial security force to check Maoist rebels increasingly targeting industries in the state.

The Jharkhand government issued a notification Wednesday evening about raising a State Industrial Security Force (SISF).

It will have one battalion with 20 units consisting of 50 troopers each, apart from the officers.

The battalion is being raised in light of Maoist rebels increasingly targeting industries and demanding protection money from them.

The state government also plans to raise a separate force to guard banks in Jharkhand.

“A force of ex-army men will also be raised soon to provide security to banks,” said a senior police officer.

Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the 24 districts of the state.
