State-owned island overhaul to get underway in Ga.

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — Jekyll Island’s makeover is getting underway.

Gov. Sonny Perdue will be among those on hand Monday for a groundbreaking on Great Dunes Park.

It’s the first phase of a facelift designed to attract tourists and convention groups back to the state-owned island. Tourism has fallen from a peak of 2.1 million visitors nearly a decade ago to 1.49 million in fiscal 2008.

The Great Dunes Park revitalization that will get underway on Monday will replace Jekyll’s cracked concrete boardwalk with a new 10-foot-wide tabby-style one that curves around dunes and connects to the rest of Jekyll’s trail system.
