Israeli police arrest convicted American pedophile

JERUSALEM — Israeli police say they have arrested a convicted American pedophile who had fled the US.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says police detectives, working on a tip from Interpol, arrested Donald Edward Nelson late Monday in a hostel in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Interior Ministry spokeswoman Sabine Hadad said Wednesday that Nelson, 59, was convicted last year in a California court on 52 counts of sexual abuse of minors and sentenced to 110 years in prison.

She added that Nelson fled the United States to avoid being jailed and was hiding out in Jerusalem. She said he would be deported in the coming days.

The U.S. Embassy had no further details on the case.
