International students consider Sydney, Melbourne most unsafe: Survey

a6SYDNEY - A recent survey of over 6,000 international students in Australia has revealed that Sydney and Melbourne are the most unfriendly and unsafe cities to live in.

Though both the cities were prized for their busy, bustling and multicultural vibes, students said the cities were poor on safety and hospitality.

Other cities ranked as most dangerous and unfriendly included Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide.

Taking a note of the survey, IDP Education (an international student recruiter) chief executive Tony Pollock said cities hoping to attract international students should play up their strengths.

“It is hard to argue with a finding that says Sydney and Melbourne have the entertainment and big-city attractiveness.

But, a city with a reputation for being affordable, clean, quiet or green can be just as appealing to families overseas,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Pollock, as saying. (ANI)

Interesting to note good old Australian reactive management versus proactive management.

It is laudable that a satisfaction survey has been done, though not aware of how questions were framed, who was the sample group etc.

I do know that the likes of IDP will only publicise good news, to boost the university industry (and positions of all those administrative personnel onshore).

The obvious question, for a sector that talks continuously about quality, teaches evaluation etc. why has there been an absolute lack of feedback from candidates and stakeholders, i.e. lack of surveying and evaluation of clients, since industry kicked off over 25 years ago…. basic marketing?

For a supposedly egalitarian country the attitude has been pay your fees and shut up….international students, an expensive nuisance to be tolerated….when Indian students started complaining a couple of years ago that was the attitude…if you do not like it f’off.

The survey actually found that Sydney, Melbourne were considered the most unsafe cities “in Australia”. But you left out the bit that the largest single group of students surveyed considered Australia to be the “most safe” country in which to study.
