KOLKATA - Having been conferred the nation’s second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan, Missionaries of Charity (MoC) Superior General Sister Nirmala Sunday said she felt humble and grateful.

‘I am grateful to god. I am grateful to the government. I feel humble,’ Nirmala was quoted as saying by a spokesperson of the order founded by Mother Teresa.

The 74-year-old nun, who took over as the Missionaries of Charity superior general in 1997 succeeding Mother Teresa, is known for her simplicity and humility.

Born Nirmala Joshi to a Brahmin family in Ranchi in 1934, she joined MoC at the age of 17 after converting from Hinduism.
