PILIBHIT - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Varun Gandhi, who spent about 20 days in prison for his reported hate speeches, Wednesday said he was not afraid of going to jail again.

Varun Gandhi, who is in Pilibhit to file his nomination papers, said this while addressing a gathering in the city’s Nawabganj locality where he stopped to inaugurate a newly constructed BJP office.

‘I will always fight for the cause of farmers and the poor. I do not fear going to jail. I am a follower of non-violence and humanity,’ Varun Gandhi said.

He was accompanied by his mother and sitting MP from Pilibhit Maneka Gandhi.

The district administration and police had made arrangements to prevent any disturbance as Varun Gandhi filed his nomination. They denied him permission to take out a procession before that.

He was jailed last month for reportedly making hate speeches against Muslims. The Supreme Court later ordered his release on parole for two weeks.
