Human rights delegation to travel to Honduras

WASHINGTON — A human rights group plans to send a delegation to Honduras to investigate alleged abuses during the country’s June 28 coup.

The Inter-American Commission of Human Rights announced Wednesday that it would send a delegation from Aug. 17 to 21. It said that it sent a letter to Honduras’ interim government detailing its plans. It says that Honduras is required to allow the visit because it is a signatory of the American Convention on Human Rights.

The commission is a branch of the Organization of American States, which suspended Honduras after the coup. The OAS is trying to persuade the interim government to permit the return of ousted President Manuel Zelaya.
