Horse dies at Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A veteran horse died while competing at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.

A news release said Kingpin, ridden by Mike Winter, fell Saturday while negotiating Fence 10 and died at the scene.

Kingpin was a 13-year-old Irish Sport horse owned by Winter and Kingpin Syndicate, according to the release, which was posted on the event’s Web site.

Winter was treated at the scene, then taken to Georgetown Community Hospital for further evaluation. He was later released.

A necropsy is planned to determine the cause of Kingpin’s death, according to the release.

A dispatcher who answered the telephone Sunday at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute said results were not available.

At last year’s Three-Day Event, two horses died and a rider was critically injured.
