NEW YORK - Socialite Paris Hilton angered Australians by spending almost 100 bucks a minute in a boutique there, but Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said it was good for tourism.

Social workers in Australia told the media that Hilton’s free spending was ‘obscene’. Tmz.com reports that Hilton got slammed in the press for spending close to $4,000 at the Wayne Cooper boutique for 40 minutes.

But Gillard said: ‘I’m obviously not as well practised at shopping as Ms. Hilton is, but Australia’s a great place to do it.’
