NEW DELHI - The government is considering a cess on natural gas produced in the country to finance the expansion of gas pipeline network, Petroleum Secretary R.S. Pandey said Wednesday.

Speaking at the India Energy Forum, Pandey said the proposed cess could be used for constructing 500 to 600 km of gas pipeline.

The petroleum secretary said Rs.3,000 crore could be generated annually through this method, if the cess was pegged at Rs.9 per one million British thermal units.
