Giant cannon, big red blob in Kapoor’s London show

LONDON — A giant cannon that fires gruesome-looking globs of red wax into a white wall is one of the highlights of an exhibition by Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor opening this week in London.

The British capital’s Royal Academy of Arts is hosting a solo exhibition of the Indian-born Kapoor’s large-scale and often bizarre-looking work.

One piece, “Svayambh,” features a block of crimson wax that inches along a set of tracks, squeezing through the classical doorways of the academy and leaving a viscous, blood-like residue throughout the building.

Another, called “Slug,” is a giant writhing wormlike form attached to what looks like a gaping red mouth. Huge distorting mirrors also feature.

The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday.
