German prison: Demjanjuk fit for prison
BERLIN — Germany’s Stadelheim prison says doctors have determined that John Demjanjuk is fit enough to remain in custody. He is being held on suspicion of acting as an accessory to the murder of 29,000 people at a Nazi death camp.
Munich prosecutors must still determine whether the 89-year-old retired autoworker from Ohio is fit enough to stand trial and have called for an expert opinion. Determining that could take up to two weeks.
Stadelheim prison said Wednesday that doctors found him in good enough health to remain in detention there and not need hospital care. He was deported from the United States and arrived in Germany on Tuesday.
