Matt Millen joins ESPN as football analyst

BRISTOL, Conn. — Matt Millen is a lot more popular as a broadcaster than he was as an NFL executive.

The architect of the league’s first 0-16 team is joining ESPN as a football analyst. He was a successful commentator at CBS and Fox before taking over the Detroit Lions in 2001 — and leading them to one of the worst eight-year stretches in NFL history.

ESPN said Thursday that Millen will call college football games and appear on NFL studio shows. He served as a guest analyst with NBC during last season’s playoffs after the Lions fired him in September.

ESPN executive vice president Norby Williamson calls Millen “one of the absolute best analysts in the business.”

Millen was on four Super Bowl championship teams during his 12-year NFL career.

Matt Millen’s eight-year tenure as CEO/GM of the Detroit Lions led to the worst eight-year record (31-97) in NFL history. This is the worst eight-year record in any sports history. Despite the team’s record on the field, Matt Millen was the second highest paid general manager in the NFL.

With a draft record that included a number of high first-round draft picks who were considered poor choices; Charles Rogers, Joey Harrington, and Mike Williams to name a few. There aren’t any current players on the roster from the 2000 draft to the 2005 draft. The only one left from 2006 is Ernie Simms. That’s six years of wasted draft picks, pitiful! How can he analyze anything?

He also hired many coaches; Bobby Ross who quit mid season with a .500 record, Marty Mornhinweg who compiled a 5-27 record during 2000–2001, and Rod Marinelli who led the Lions to a 0-16 season (10-38 in 3 years). How can he comment on NFL coaching?

Matt Millen is a charismatic con-artist with no credibility. What can he analyze? When he left Millen referred to his job as “football prison”, a prison he created! Millen has no integrity. Accepting this job, with ESPN, after what he did to the Detroit Lions means Millen has no respect the game of football. I will not watch ESPN!
