Domestic help arrested for thefts

NEW DELHI - A domestic help has been arrested for alleged looting at several places in south Delhi as well as in neighbouring Gurgaon and Hisar, police said Monday.

Kamal Majhi, a resident of East Midnapur in West Bengal, was arrested from the cantonment area here four days ago after he robbed a senior Supreme Court lawyer of various precious articles.

“Kamal has a long criminal career. His tactic of looting in the house starts when he wins the confidence of the house owner. He used to give his photograph and school certificates to show that he was genuine, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal told reporters.

Within two-three days of his employment he used to ransack the house and flee with cash, jewellery and other valuables from the house, Dhaliwal added.

According to police, he was allegedly involved in several cases of theft in south Delhi, Gurgaon and Hisar.

Dhaliwal said Kamal’s recent target was senior lawyer C.L. Sareen, a resident of Malaviya Nagar, and he looted a rare 18th century one-rupee coin.

We have recovered a laptop, digital camera, antique coins and debit and credit cards of foreign banks from him, Dhaliwal said.

During interrogation, Kamal told police that a part of the stolen goods has been handed over to one of his acquaintances named Suresh Majhi, he said.

The accused also admitted to having committed theft of jewellery items worth about Rs.25 lakh from Hisar in Haryana this year as well as jewellery and other costly items worth Rs.20 lakh from Punjabi Bagh locality here in 2005.
