Eversince some t-shirts have surfaced in Japan reading “Obama for Obama”,  questions have begun to be asked as to what “Obama” means in the Japanaese language. The Japanese word Obama means “little beach.” But other than that it is also the name of a city in Japan.

In the Edo period, Obama was the capital of the Obama Domain and was the starting point of the Mackerel Road to Kyoto. The area was municipalized as a city in March 30, 1951  In the Ritsuryō period, Obama was the capital of Wakasa Province, which is regarded as one of entrances to the continental culture. Thus even today, a large number of temples which are in some war or the other related to the Yamato Dynasty are found to be located in Obama. This city is called “Nara by the sea”. Thus now it becomes clear what Obama for Obama means when it appears on Japanese t-shirts. It means that the people of Obama, Japan are expressing their heartfelt support for President Barack Obama.

Obama expressed his thanks and his gratitude to the Obama City in Japan for the support they have shown to Obama in his election campaign as they had made t-shirt and headbands supporting the Obama election campaign.
