Plans unveiled for new National Children’s Museum

OXON HILL, Md. — The new National Children’s Museum near Washington, D.C., will be a four-story building with a rooftop garden and a wall of living plants.

The museum designs were unveiled Wednesday by Connecticut architect Cesar Pelli. There will also be a glass atrium, a wind turbine and reflective roof panels. The museum will be located at the National Harbor development in Prince George’s County in Maryland.

Museum officials must raise more than $180 million to complete the project. Maryland has contributed $7 million. It is scheduled to open in 2013.

The museum was previously known as the Capital Children’s Museum and located at a former convent in Washington. It closed five years ago and has since organized traveling exhibits and educational programs.
