Slovakia to build new nuclear power plant
PRAGUE — Two state-run companies from the Czech Republic and Slovakia signed a deal Friday to create a joint company that will build a new nuclear power station in Slovakia.
The Czech Republic’s main power utility CEZ AS and Slovak energy company JAVYS AS will build the power station near the existing Soviet-era nuclear plant in Jaslovske Bohunice in western Slovakia.
That plant originally had four units — one of them was shut down in 2006, while the other was closed at the end of last year at the EU’s request for security reasons.
Representatives of the two partners declined to give details about the project after signing the deal during an European nuclear energy forum in Prague. They said they will not be available until a detailed study of the project is concluded in about 18 months.
CEZ previously said both partners would share the cost, which could reach up to euro6 billion ($8.3 billion).
