Czech capital marks anniversary of legendary Prague rabbi Yehudav Loew with exhibition

Rabbi Loew exhibition opens in Prague

PRAGUE — An exhibition has opened at Prague Castle to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Rabbi Yehuda Loew, one of the greatest Jewish scholars and philosophers.

Rabbi Loew, also known as the Maharal of Prague, lived from 1525 to 1609.

An authority on the Talmud, he is well-remembered for a legend about him creating a clay figure known as Golem which he is said to have brought to life to protect Prague’s Jewish community from attacks.

Loew’s tombstone at Prague’s Jewish cemetery is visited by thousands every year.

The “Path of Life” exhibition focuses on Loew’s real life as well legends linked to him. It includes materials from various institutions, including Prague’s Jewish Museum and Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, and runs through Nov 8.
