PUDUCHERRY - Three companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed to ’strengthen the law and order machinery’ in Puducherry Thursday, a top official said.

The move came on a day Alok Kumar Varma took charge as director general of police and T.M. Balakrishnan was given additional charge of the home department as special home secretary.

‘The situation is totally under control and the CRPF personnel are here to strengthen the law and order machinery,’ a senior police officer told IANS.

The deployment comes after a group of policemen protested and staged a sit-in in court premises after a policeman was denied bail Friday. Some policemen also reportedly clashed journalists.

Ten policemen were suspended and 25 junior officials were transferred after the incident and DGP A.S. Khan was shunted out of the state and Varma was posted in his place.
