Correction: Immigration-Detention Conditions story
WASHINGTON — In an Aug. 6 story about planned changes by the Obama administration to immigration detention, The Associated Press reported erroneously that entering the country illegally the first time is a civil violation.
It is a crime, but illegal immigrants caught in the United States generally face only civil penalties, or fines, and deportation.
