Correction: Afghanistan story

KABUL — In an Aug. 11 story about the soaring number of IED attacks in Afghanistan, The Associated Press reported erroneously that a recent U.N. report said insurgents’ bombs killed at least 1,013 Afghan civilians in the first six months of 2009. The U.N. attributed the deaths to all war-related violence, including militant attacks and U.S. and NATO airstrikes — not just insurgents’ bombs.
