OSHA fines companies for fatal Oregon explosion

BOARDMAN, Ore. — Two companies have been fined a combined $90,000 for safety and health violations related to a February explosion that killed a worker in Boardman, in northern Oregon.

The explosion occurred at the ConAgra Foods potato processing plant, where welder Kevin Gregerson was repairing a leak in a steel tank used for potato washing. Gases built up under the tank, which ignited, causing the explosion.

Gregerson worked for NW Metal Fabricators, a contractor at the site.

Oregon-OSHA said Thursday the companies violated rules that protect workers who enter confined spaces that contain hazards. It levied a $65,000 fine against ConAgra and a $25,000 fine against NW Metal Fabricators.

Both companies have 30 days to appeal.
