URUMQI - China is planning to include four mountain lakes in the country’s northwest on the World Heritage List, an expert said Tuesday. The lakes will be entered as a single unit on the list.

It will be the Xinjiang region’s first entry on the World Heritage List of UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) if the nomination is accepted.

The four lakes are: Kanas, Tianchi, Sayram and Karakora. The water bodies have a combined area of 4,600 sq km and are more than 1,000 meters above the sea level.

China has 38 entries on the World Heritage List: 27 cultural properties, seven nature features and four mixed entries.
