Survey: Hawaii has nation’s highest housing costs
HONOLULU — With the highest housing costs in the nation, it’s not surprising Hawaii leads the nation in multigenerational households.
More than 7 percent of Hawaii households have at least three generations living together, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey for 2008.
Hawaii’s high cost of housing could also account for the survey finding that the islands lead the nation in percentage of housing units with one or more occupants per room (8.4 percent).
The median value for owner-occupied housing in Hawaii was $560,200, about $86,000 more than in the District of Columbia, which ranked second. Median value means half the values were above and half below the median.
The survey, which was based on a sampling of the population, found the national median value was nearly $198,000.
