Car falls onto NY tracks, misses landing on train

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — A woman escaped serious injury when her car plunged about 20 feet onto train tracks in a suburb of New York City.

Police say the car landed about 10 feet behind an Amtrak train as passengers were boarding it Monday afternoon.

The 72-year-old driver lost control after she was hit by another car in New Rochelle, about 20 miles north of New York City. She crashed through a stone wall above the train station and the car landed roof first on the tracks below. Police cut her out of her seat belt. She was treated for cuts from broken glass.

Westchester County Legislator Jim Maisano was on the platform. He says onlookers gasped — and then ran to get a closer look.

He called the scene “surreal.”
