UK says its embassy staffer on trial in Tehran
LONDON —Britain’s Foreign Office says a staff member at its embassy in Iran has been put on trial in Tehran.
The ministry says it saw Hossein Rassam pictured among those accused at a mass trial that began Saturday in the Iranian capital, though Rassam had been released from detention in July. At the time Iranian authorities alleged he had harmed national security during protests that followed the country’s disputed presidential elections.
The Foreign Office said Saturday that the situation is unacceptable and “directly contradicts assurances we had been given repeatedly by senior Iranian officials.” It said it would respond to “this latest outrage.”
