Boston Globe, others win Web journalism awards

NEW YORK — The Boston Globe, a newspaper that has faced the threat of closure, was among the news outlets that took home multiple awards in this year’s EPpy Awards, a competition for the best Web sites in the media business.

The winners of the competition, sponsored by Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek magazines, were announced Thursday at the Interactive Newspaper Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans.

The Globe scored for Best Sports Blog, for sportswriter Tony Massarotti’s blog, “Mazz,” and Best Entertainment Web Site with more than 1 million monthly visitors, where its two finalists tied for the award.

The Las Vegas Sun also won in two categories — Best Newspaper-Affiliated Web Site with fewer than 1 million unique monthly visitors and Best Web Special Feature, News or Event among those smaller sites for its “History of Las Vegas” entry.

ESPN, a unit of Walt Disney Co., won for Best Network TV/Cable-Affiliated Web Site and Best Sports Web Site in the category for larger news outlets.

CNN won for Best News/Politics Blog, for its “Political Ticker,” and Best News Web Site among larger outlets.

Other notable winners included AOL-owned Engadget.com, which won in the Best Consumer Technology Blog category.

CNN and AOL are both owned by Time Warner Inc.

The Boston Globe is owned by The New York Times Co., which has threatened to shut it down unless its unions agreed to cut annual expenses by $20 million. The company has struck agreements with six of seven unions and awaits membership approval of concessions by the seventh and largest union, the Boston Newspaper Guild.

Guild leaders have agreed to present the Times Co.’s final offer to its members for a vote, but do not plan to recommend for or against its ratification.

The Times Co.’s flagship newspaper and its About.com site also won separate awards.
