Audit after shooting says officers need training
OAKLAND, Calif. — An audit done after the fatal shooting of an unarmed man says San Francisco Bay area transit officers need more training and presence on trains and at stations.
The audit by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives is scheduled to be discussed Thursday by the transit agency board in response to the New Year’s Day killing of an unarmed black man by a white transit officer.
The organization was hired by the Bay Area Rapid Transit agency to conduct the study.
Since that shooting, former transit officer Johannes Mehserle (yoh-HAH’-nes MEZ’-ur-lee) has pleaded not guilty to the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on a train station platform.
The study also says officers need to work with a more comprehensive use-of-force policy.
